167 CARTER THE UNSTOPPABLE SEX MACHINE, Destroy The Boy, Bristol Fleece, Wednesday 20 June 1990

Back to this ramshackle old shed The Fleece, a venue I could quite easily get pissed in! A pity I was driving. Support Destroy The Boy played an intelligent and hard rocking set; with an excellent female vocalist, deep and husky and reminiscent of Patti Smith, and some good tunes, they may be a name to watch...

Carter USM were welcomed by the usual nutjob crew of moshers and stagediving nutcases, as appears to be increasingly the case at their gigs, so I stayed back with Veronica and took in the performance from a distance. Carter were their usual abrasive, challenging, loud and rockingly raucous selves, blasting out beatbox battlehymns of urban deprivation, or whatever it is they sing about. With the press seemingly behind them, and a subsequent upward popularity trajectory which shows no sign of levelling off, world domination beckons...
