98 LLOYD COLE AND THE COMMOTIONS, The Railway Children, Gloucester Leisure Centre, Friday 15 April 1988

Drove a carload up to Gloucester to see Lloyd Cole for the first time in a few years. Firstly, however, support The Railway Children were competent stage performers of excellent, intelligent and well crafted songs, but got a little lost in this big sports hall venue. Lloyd Cole, however, projected himself startlingly better; he's certainly changed from the shy stutterer of old, now a Morrissey-like figure, tempting and teasing the audience, and leading the Commotions through an excellent sweaty set of his bookish and wordy bedsit pop, based largely on recent LP "Mainstream".
