102 THE CHESTERFIELDS, The Caretaker Race, Birmingham Polytechnic, Friday 13 May 1988
Bopped up to Birmingham with a carload, navigating our way to the venue thanks to a good map, and arriving in good time to see the band soundcheck! We all got in on the guest-list as well... free gigs, that's what I like!
Good entertainment beforehand; a good disco (REM, Motorcycle Boy, Woodentops etc.) preceded a good, quietly impressive support set by NME journalist Andy Strickland's band The Caretaker Race.
The Chesterfields however justified the long and tiring journey up to Birmingham by playing the best set I've seen them do; full of their usual ramshackle, catchy pop fun, but also full of fire and power (eh?). "Alison Wait" was a memorable hooky highlight, so we extolled the virtues of that song and suggested it as the next single to the band, when we popped backstage afterwards to compliment them on a great show!
