153 THE PSYCHEDELIC FURS, The Fat Lady Sings, Bristol Colston Hall, Saturday 3 February 1990
They've renovated the bar at this venerable old venue! Lots of old people out tonight - like me, for instance! - to see the return of The Furs.
First up, however, The Fat Lady Sings played a very fine support set of Irish-tinged, well constructed pop, with traces of Del Amitri, Kevin McDermott and Hothouse Flowers and a nice, self-effacing attitude. Very promising indeed.
The Psychedelic Furs were ostensibly promoting their new LP, the slightly disappointing "Book Of Days", but perversely their set delved considerably into 1981's infinitely preferable "Talk Talk Talk" album! Vocalist Richard Butler's not getting any younger but he thankfully refuses to clean up his act or his gravelly/ nasally late night voice, and he led the Furs through another great kinetic performance, with massive, soaring versions of "Forever Now" and "President Gas" notable highlights of a thumping good sleazoid rock'n'roll set!
